Ms. Gloria Miller, a Chemistry graduate of Michigan State College (we’ve been Michigan State University since 1964) in 1946, spoke to ELC students on July 17. After covering a lesson on living long, healthy lives and another about MSU history, we utilized new vocabulary and curiosity to ask questions about her college life in the early-mid 1940s, her childhood, her career, and life in general.
She described campus as being primarily north of the Red Cedar River, dancing at Coral Gables, learning to smoke cigarettes as a way of socializing in the dorm “Smoker”, not being allowed to wear pants on campus, an 8 pm curfew in the dorms, and being required to close blackout curtains due to the war. She inspired all of us to “enjoy every minute” and to not “dwell on mistakes. Just try to fix them!”
We’ll look forward to having her back next year when she is 100 years old!
