The African Studies Center (ASC) and the English Language Center (ELC) at Michigan State University (MSU) partnered to provide English language training to faculty and researchers from French-speaking African countries.

For six months, MSU, through the ELC, provided a course dedicated to English-language improvement with a subject focus of English for Special Purposes (ESP) and content in STEM. The ELC provided weekly meetings that focuses on improving listening, reading, writing, and technical vocabulary with the goal of helping the scholars better convey their research and work to outside English-speaking audiences. The scholars also had many opportunities to identify the writing styles and conventions connected with writing in their own fields and their own professional needs.

At the conclusion of the sessions, the scholars produced a final project showcasing their particular field of work that was shared with the African Studies Center’s community of K-12 educators. These final projects also now serve as as a resource for the development of K-12 lesson plans featuring some of the research and achievements being carried out in Africa.

Final Project are available here.

The ELC would like to extend a hearty congratulations to all the scholars and our collaborators for such amazing work!
