The Online American English and Culture Program (OAECP) is an intensive, 4 week online program provided by the Michigan State University English Language Center (ELC). The program will be taught both synchronously (live) and asynchronously (independently and self-paced), and students will study English through a content-based approach, primarily focusing on U.S. culture and history. The combination of synchronous and asynchronous instruction will be equivalent to approximately 20 hours per week. Students will be emailed program certificates upon completion of all required assignments.
The Online American English and Culture Program will run from January 11 to February 5, 2020. The MSU English Language Center will provide a program orientation on January 7, 2020.
All synchronous instruction will take place from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., Monday to Friday, but students may also be required to collaborate with each other on assignments and small group projects, and they will work together to select times that will work best for their schedules.
After submitting an application for the program, students will be required to sign up to take the online MSU English Language Test (MSUELT). Test results will provide the ELC with information about the students’ English proficiency and may be used to determine eligibility for the program.
The Online American English and Culture Program will be able to accommodate up to 20 students per section. If fewer than 10 students apply for the program, the ELC reserves the right to cancel the program but will offer the students the opportunity to take part in the ELC’s online Intensive English Program during the same time period at the same cost.
The cost of the Online American English and Culture Program is $1,000 per participant. That cost includes program materials, course enrollment, and access to MSU online instructional tools.
Applications and payments are due by November 30, 2020.
